White male. Applied to JMU and got in. Grades - about a 3.7 with literally no honors. Just basic classes. Decidedly average SAT scores - I don't know if he even sent them. Only 1 sport and he wasn't recruited. No other activities. Some sort of business major. He ended up going where he was recruited to play.

How many APs and what were the SAT scores that you chose not to send in if you don't mind sharing

3.97uw/4.36w 1430 SAT
5AP/1DE. Very stem focussed.
Major: mathematics

Course rigor matters a lot, more so than people think, but you have to still maintain the GPA. I would actually go by what is known about the teachers in the school for those particular classes next year as a potential factor for deciding. Example, my daughter had a harder time in US history honors than AP US history based on what everything I heard and that was the case across the board for a lot of her friends.

For Virginia Tech, major, demographics, being first gen or Pell eligible, and your service level or volunteer work really matters more than people think.

For jmu, course rigor I know matters more than others think, I know a girl who basically didn’t take any APs so what look like a matching GPA but had a 1400 SAT and did not get into Jmu. JU has also gotten very competitive in the past 3 to 5 years, as they’ve gained national attention.

2023 DS, white male, not first gen. Wgpa 4.1, sat 670 V, 710 math. 7 APs, all the rest honors. Varsity sports captain and very involved in that all 4 years. District and state individual champion in the sport.

Waitlisted at VT for business major. Definitely knew people in his class (close friends) with lower GPA’s and SATs, who got into liberal arts majors at VT.

JMU business and honors college acceptance

DD didn't apply to VT.

JMU: accepted last year with 7 AP classes, 1300 SAT, 3.9 weighted GPA from one of the really big FCPS HS. Undecided major. GL!

For Tech, yes, people should list the intended major because it does matter a lot there.

I don't think JMU is more or less competitive for certain majors.

Our naviance is all over the place and my junior is debating between some course levels for next year. Thanks for any info.
