I always felt comfortable walking in my lane and letting others walk in their lanes, no matter its a sect, religion, ethnicity or race etc. Only reason 95% of us follow any sect or religion or feel faithful to a race or ethnicity, is because we were born and raised into it. It's not a conscious or well thought out choice for most, even if we try to believe so.

Shia will tend to not advertise their Shia-ness unless they are sure the person they are talking to isn’t sectarian. My kids go to a Sunday Arabic school and it is Sunni because that’s the default. I’ve never mentioned to the teacher who I love that I am Shia. She is Syrian and because of the Syrian war she hates Shia and thinks they are non-Muslim. She even told me that once. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything and went back to the car and cried. My husband had to calm me down. Anyways I got over it and kept them in the school because they are really good with teaching Arabic. The religion portion is very general and deals with things common to both sects and then they learn Quran as well.

It sounds like Catholics and Protestants -- some care; some don't

And they have tried to kill each other over differences in belief over same god.

By the way, about 10% of American Myslims are Shia.

We are muslims but my DH attended a catholic school and my kids attended Jewish, Baptist and secular schools. As a person who was born Sunni, I would've no problem sending my kid to a Shia school as long as its good in academics and not just a religious school. I feel that most liberal American Muslims would feel the same. However conservative Sunni or Shia wouldn't like their kids to attend other sect's schools, another religion's schools or secular schools.

Are there many Shia Muslims in the US? Would a Shia Muslim send their kid to a Sunni Muslim school?
