Have you been doing anything to help your child? Interesting how your first thought is to punish instead of trying to figure out a solution.

Oh my. This poor kid is barely in school. He’s only 8. It takes time. Geez.

No punishment

Just make him do more problems like the kind he is getting wrong

He will need to do them until he slows down, tries and answers the questions correctly

Kids get letter grades in 3rd grade?

Also I’m assuming you would have had some clue that your kid wasn’t working to potential. Or did the teacher just mention this now that grades are due?

Is the rushing on tests, homework, everything? Are mistakes with following and understanding directions, miscalculations, or leaving out details like dollar signs and units?

Yes, this. Sounds like plain old immaturity rather than aptitude. My DS was similar at the age but matured beautifully, got straight As in a HS magnet and now attends an elite college. Focus on praising his best efforts not punishing him.

Could also be ADHD.

Tutoring is the consequence - kid needs help

If he's not trying - yes.
If he needs help with learning, habits - no, work with him instead.

For Cs we just didn't $$$ reward, only As and Bs.

Having you as a parent is punishment enough.

3rd grader likely getting a C on report card in math. What should be consequence (if any?) Teacher said mostly due to rushing, not trying, and making careless mistakes. He’s in the gifted classes and hasn’t had to study much before.

Should we take away a privilege? put him in math tutoring? Was previously in mathnasium but hated it. Likes robotics and programming.

How do you handle disappointing grades when student is capable of better?
