Elevate is a good training program for that age and has camps.

Good information, but it sounds like the poster’s child is a fifth grader (or younger). At that age, I wouldn’t recommend AAU programs that involve extensive travel. A child’s focus should be on skill development through quality training—not on playing in out-of-state AAU tournaments. There is plenty of strong competition in the DMV area, and we really shouldn’t be flying 10–14-year-olds around to IL/FL so they can become TikTok or Instagram famous.

FCYBL does not have a spring league. Don't be scared of AAU. Elementary/MS aged AAU comes in 3 different flavors. To simplify things:

1.) A level: (Jr. EYBL/Shoe Circuit) Potential HS/D1 College/Pro Bound Athletes; lots of traveling/overnight stays; $$$

2.) B level: 1-2 overnight stays, Potential HS/D2,D3 College; $$

3.) C level: Local Tournaments, Potential HS players; $

In your situation, look at local AAU organizations fielding B and C teams. You'll need to hurry because spring/summer tryouts is ongoing and will end soon.

If you missed the windows, there are some rec level spring ball. If your child have any talent, you should move away from rec as soon as possible.

For training, try Next Level in Merrifield.

Also, I have heard that they are primarily focused on games without a lot of practice time, is that correct? We have done one session with Evolution and are also looking at that for spring - is there an alternative that people recommend? Our daughter definitely improved, but it seemed a bit unfocused.

My understanding is that AAU teams play from spring through summer, but we aren't looking to go down that rabbit hole yet. The plan is to let trying out for 5th grade FCYBL and hopefully the resulting season of same be our introduction to a more competitive basketball experience.

For summer, what are good local-ish basketball camps (i.e. not sleepaway)? We have done some through FCPA, but now want to look for a more dedicated basketball camp within driving distance. Growing up, most of the ones I did were through colleges. It looks like GMU and Marymount have summer youth basketball camps, any feedback on these?

PVI has a good camp. A lot of people attend Occonell’s camp and many of the other local high schools. George Mason probably will be doing something. Saint James will have camps. Gillion is also a good place to get training
