I know more about healthy nutrition than my primary care doctor for sure. During my last check up she asked me what do I do that I have such a healthy weight ( I'm 48 Female, 5'4" with 115 lbs), my blood work was perfect. I told her what I eat and bake. I grew up in Europe, our food was always fresh, unprocessed, made from scratch. Fruits from orchands, vegetables from our garden, local meat. Our bread would spoil in a few days, if not eaten promptly. Unpasteurized milk, sauerkraut etc. You get the idea. Food in USA in general is the biggest disaster. There is no other country that has so much processed food in their stores and so many fast food stores on each corner. Kids eating Pop tarts for breakfast, sugar loaded drinks all day long. It truly is sad to see that. The good thing is that there is also healthy food available everywhere here, you just have to know what to buy or order it online. But an average American seems to really not understand how to navigate the nutrition world.

Actually, the federal guidelines drive federal purchases for millions of people/meals: military, prisons, schools and SNAP. The regulations will flow from this.

It is all for show as no one really follows these guidelines. If we did American's wouldn't be in the shape they are currently in.

Overall the image is fine- focus on more protein and vegetables and fewer grains/carbs. However, telling people to eat more saturated fat is a recipe for a heart disease.

That's even more egregious as this population can also be in poverty- telling them they need to buy more red meat for nutrition? That's irresponsible.

The people that need guidance on these issues don’t have the attention span to actually read anything anyways. Nobody reads any of these guidelines.

Don’t eat a bunch of industrial processed shelf stable and frozen garbage. Problem solved.

For years, the nutritional guidelines have been influenced by food industry- who pay. This is a clear example of pay to play. We know this is bs. And will harm people.
Go to MyPlate. Whole grains, veggies, fruits, protein in the form of plant protein or meat if preferred.

People have pilointed out that their push for specific foods doesn't match the written guidelines on limiting saturated fats.

Frankly for me, red meat is a sometimes food, just off cost alone. Plenty of other protein sources.

Ultimately use sources you trust and if you need extra help talk to a dietician.

What do you all think about the new dietary guidelines? I am seeing conflicting opinions coming from fitness coaches and nutritionists. Looks like red meat is back.
