Some titles have a max pay band

Titles are more valuable when you’re trying to move externally.

The closer you are to retirement, the less you care about your job title (3 more years and I dgaf what my title is). If you are rising in your career, you care because x title leads to a job with xx title leads to a job with xxx title.

I’m driven by liking my work but idgaf about the title and I only care about the pay a little because my spouse makes like 10x me anyway.

This is America. Appearances are everything.

Both the title and the scope of responsibility matter when you job search. If your responsibilities have increased and the title is no longer accurate, that should be an easy fix. If the responsibilities are consistent with the title, that is more of a problem.

This is a good question. I was laid off last year at 48. I found another job within 6 months. I can honestly say the only reason I found a job that fast was because I probably made it past most HR filters who thought I was still an entry level person. I was a "Staff associate"

I would take any job title but administrative assistant and I don't care how much the pay is lol.

I would rather be general counsel and make less base comp than be a vp of legal and earn more. More future mobility.

Why do some people care so much about job title?

I have seen so called Senior Director barely making over $120k in some industries.

I have the most boring job title of "Business Assistant" not even Analyst. Yet I make $150k. I am driven by the pay and not the title. I started at $102k and made it to the $150 within 6 years at the same company and with the same title responsibilities have increased of course but so did the pay.
