My mom took to to get mine pierced at 2, but said I wouldn’t stay still for the piercing so waited until I was 4. I think it’s fine. I have four daughters and pierced their ears anywhere from 2-5.

I think it's incredibly offensive to use that word because it's so loaded. I actually can't think of anything that I would describe as trashy because it has such negative connotations.

I personally don't like piercing babies' ears so I handled that by not doing mine. If someone else does it, I don't have to like it, but I don't get to label it, especially not with that word.

It’s a form of mutilation and the baby hasn’t consented to this.

Babies also don't give consent re: which parents they get, so a lot of life is unfair.

In other cultures genital mutilation also the norm - doesn’t mean it’s ok.

It is cultural.

I had mine done at 3 and did my daughter’s at 3.

We didn't do it, but other cultures do - no judgements from me on something as innocuous as ear piercing little girls. Somehow, it did bother me recently to see a 2 year old boy with pierced ears

I think it’s cultural. I personally wasn’t allowed to pierce my ears until 18, and my daughters pierced at 16, but my niece was pierced as an infant. My SiL is from a different country and culture.

I don't think it's trashy and I know it's a thing in a number of cultures that are not mind. I mind my own business on this point.

However, it goes the other way too -- I have encountered mothers tell me I "should have" pierced my daughter's ears when she was young and I tell them it's none of their business.

I’m not sure. I literally never see it anymore, even on little Latina babies which is a huge population where I live.

Someone here on DCUM apparently believes it’s (as she put it) “trashy” of parents to pierce an infant or toddler girls’ ears.

I expressed my view in the original thread (I am deeply offended by this).

But what does the rest of DCUM feel?
