DP. My kid took a few years of their ELA classes, and they were fantastic. If it were more convenient I would definitely do the summer classes there.

Find a fun summer camp like normal people do at this age. Fresh air, exercise, swimming, games, friendships are all as equally valuable as math and reading at this young age and shouldn’t be ignored.


I could imagine the first month or two of grade 2–reviewing first grade content—being painfully boring after such a summer program!

Why does she need summer school going into grade 2? Is she having difficulty. Or if you’re just trying to push her into 3rd grade skills, why?

Find a fun summer camp like normal people do at this age. Fresh air, exercise, swimming, games, friendships are all as equally valuable as math and reading at this young age and shouldn’t be ignored.

DCPS offers a Summer Acceleration program. There has not yet been any update for this current summer but I expect it will come out soon. Teachers and staff can obtain priority registration for some kids who need it, and you can try to register when it opens to the public.

Veritas in Arlington had summer "camps" that did daily work. You can check if they are still running those.

Try Sidwell Summer or Mclean Summer Edge (Potomac, MD). You would register your child for morning academic camp and afternoon fun camp.

Hi,

Is anyone familiar with a summer school that is essentially the same as regular school that covers two months please? Our child is entering grade two.

I don't want anything pure academic but also not anything pure fun - a mix of both would be great but it should have dedicated math and reading... just like regular school.
