Dp sorry for asking, but where exactly do you put the ice packs? Does this work temporarily or does it last all day?

There is no immediate danger unless this lasts more than a few days, OP. You are at risk of developing anemia. I'm sorry this is messing with your life.

I am 45 and this happens in about half my periods these days. I talked to my Gyn and she scheduled a transvaginal ultrasound (away from my period) to see what was going on. I am suspected of having endometriosis due to pain and the aspect of my ovarian cysts, but other than that, there was no fibroid or polyp that could cause this bleeding. She suggested that I could go into chemical menopause by taking Depo-Lupron, but I don't want that. I have a family history of breast cancer and the pill/HRT is not recommended.

I am slightly anemic, which for now I manage by tweaking my diet. Maybe I'll have to take an iron supplement at some point.

If it's at day 5.5 I would wait and mention it next visit. I have had periods like that for years but I also have other issues as well but I would drinking lots of water and take iron. It can be normal for you to have a sudden heavy flow now if you're entering peri. Could be peri could be a fibriod so I wouldn't worry.

Do you think there is any possibility you were pregnant and are having a miscarriage?

I am 43. My periods are typically very regular, which is why this one is noticeably different.

I guess I am just wondering if it is normal to have a one off, weirdly heavy period as you get older. Given the lack of other symptoms, it is really only the quantity of blood that is a concern.

Do I need immediate care? Or just mention at the next regular check up? Or schedule a check up this week but don’t bother with wasting ER resources?

At 43, yes, it can be normal. But I would call your dr to discuss if/when you should go to the ER and to make an appt.

At age 43, yes, can absolutely be normal. But your doctor will likely order some tests to make sure it’s not something else. (Like fibroids.)

Schedule the checkup sooner, and ask what they recommend regarding the ER when you make the appointment.

Advil can help in the short-term, and having a Mirena eventually placed is often recommended for regular heavy bleeding, if feasible.

I’m the PP from 08:34 and this is what I eventually had to do after ruling out potential bad causes.

I had this out of the blue a few years ago, and when I finally called my doctor on day 7, they seemed totally unconcerned and didn’t get me in there til around day 11. (Just for some context—it didn’t seem urgent to anyone else but me.) Maybe see if it tapers off in the next day or two, and take an iron supplement in the meantime. I started to feel a little lightheaded after a while. Good luck.

I would. I’ve always heard that bleeding through 1 pad an hour (which is what you are doing) was the threshold for seeking medical care.

Period started about 4.5 days ago. Day 1.5 was heavy, with multiple large, finger size clumps.

The past 3 days have been very heavy bleeding. Changing ultra tampons/super plus every hour or so. The most I have gone between changing is 2 hours. Waking multiple times in the night to change. Bleeding through (thank goodness for period underwear).

I have zero other symptoms. No cramping, no headaches, not lightheaded, no fever, etc. Just so much bleeding.

Should I go to ER/Urgent care today (it is Sunday)? Doctor tomorrow? Ride it out for one month and see what happens next month?
