I have been known to order a birthday cake for myself when it isn't even my birthday. Granted, sans Happy Birthday, but still.

For many families, It’s the act of doing something nice for another on their birthday. Anyone can pick up a cake for themselves. If you have a cake preference, You can easily tell your husband was gay you want. In our house, birthday person does nothing.

Some of us also do this and not sad at all about it! I love treating myself to some new jewelry on my birthday. My DH also buys me gifts but he's bad at picking out jewelry so leaves that to me. He buys me thoughtfully practical gifts.

No you are normal and your colleague is being rude.

I often make or order my own birthday cake, even though I have a spouse and friends who would do it if I didn't want to, because I am particular about cake. No one thinks this is sad and people are always excited about what cake I make or pick.

Telling someone that their life is "sad" is unbelievably rude. Pitying someone who isn't asking for pity and in fact is happy is also rude.

I always order birthday cakes for the whole family, including myself. Dh picks them up usually for all, including his own cake.

People are cruel with their words.

I was telling a coworker that I would let her know how the cakes turn out from the Harris Teeter near our office since I ordered myself a birthday cake from there. She acted as if it was the saddest thing she had heard. She phrased her response as if nor my family or husband were unable to order it for me.

I’ve always ordered myself a cake. I never realized people’s spouses did the ordering for something as simple as a birthday cake?!.
