Airline pilots.

Useful post. Hopefully some people will find opportunities they didn't think about. Some of the sectors such as education can be very low pay and the barriers to entry (certification etc) high. While not every state is not West Virginia, there aren't many states that pay teachers the way NY does though for example.

Education. Tons of opportunities for career switchers, too. Schools are having a terrible time retaining teachers each year, so there are always openings.

I work in govcon, so am very tied to this area but my partner does not. He has a job he could do anywhere and would like to move to a lower cost of living area. Only impediment is my (high earning) job. I’m starting to seriously consider getting a community college degree/certification in one of the above areas so we could move.

Sounds scary if such inspections are done in the dark.

Also, the 2am to 4am availability expectation sounds like a booty call.

Corporate consolidation means there are less jobs to go around. That's why antitrust laws exist. Unfortunately, they haven't been enforced in 20 years.

Engineering- structural, for people who are willing to go out to the field during odd hours (nights and weekends when structures are available for inspection). Doesn’t mean that all your work is like that, but you have to be available for 2 am - 4 am inspections.

The white collar market is generally pretty bad right now. Low hire, low fire as they say so if youbare looking it is going to be tough. Based upon the recent job reports the blue collar market is experiencing this as well.

Accounting--CPA-tax prep and payroll
Lawyers--Estate Law and Tax

I have friends who own the above small businesses. All are hiring with professional level jobs. The main complaint by the owners is they have a tough time finding people who work the hours that the jobs require.

We know restaurants have been hiring for the past 1000 years. So let's exclude those.
