SCB and LFI services are both for students who are determined eligible to earn a MD high school certificate, instructed using the alternative learning outcomes framework, and assessed using the alternative state assessment. You cannot be a diploma bound student in these sets of services.

MCPS website-special education services for the most accurate information.

You should look at the general MCPS website and do a quick search of special education services to get accurate information.

Just to add a little to this:

HSM - elementary home school model - supporting students in general education classes with a co-teacher (general education teacher). May teach a small resource class to allow students to get extra support on assignments, extended time, organizational skills. May teach a small reading or math intervention. I think these students receive over 15 hours of support a week.

LAD - secondary learning and academic disabilities (typically students with SLD, ADHD, etc) - supporting students in general education classes with a co-teacher (general education teacher). May teach a small resource class to allow students to get extra support on assignments, extended time, organizational skills. May teach a small reading or math intervention. These teachers usually will co-teach math or English classes.

Extensions - Extensions services are designed for students in kindergarten through 21 with significant cognitive disabilities, multiple disabilities, and/or Autism who demonstrate self-injurious and/or disruptive behaviors and are in need of specially designed instruction in the areas of communication and social skills, while accessing instruction aligned with the Maryland Alternate Achievement Standards.

SCB - school community based services - student with significant disabilities. Typically self-contained and many students are working on alternative skills (may not take MCAPP). Students may work with other providers like OT, PT and speech. Older students will have opportunities to work on real world skills in the community, often going on trips into the community.

LFI - learning for independence. Students with intellectual disabilities. Typically self-contained with some time in the general education environment. Some may still be working on diploma, but many will be working on alternative standards. Includes trips into the community for life skills.

HBS - hours based staffing. Similar to LAD.

Xminds is a fantastic special education resource for MoCo. They are not part of MCPS but they do work closely with the school system. The placements page provides a good overview of what’s available in MCPS and provides an explanation of the abbreviations you inquired about above.
