WABA website is a good resource. My kids were younger, but had success on a grass incline. We didn’t take the pedals off, but moved the seat down as far as possible so his feet could be on the ground. Starting at the top of the small incline, he picked his feet up off the ground and coasted to the bottom. He walked his way back up and repeated the process several times. It helped him figure out the balance. He hadn’t done a balance bike, but knew how to pedal. After a couple of tries, he moved his feet to the pedals and began pedaling at the end of the incline.

REI stopped offering the classes. They take the pedals off teach the kids like it's a balance bike no matter the size bike. Your kid needs a bike that he can straddle and have his feet on the ground for this method. You should be able to find videos on You Tube.

My ten-year-old took the REI class years ago and we didn't keep practicing and she just wanted to scooter. She got motivated this fall and started practicing in the back yard. She got it in a day. Then she kept practicing in the yard. Christmas Day, she wanted to practice in a parking lot and now she's everywhere on the bike. She now has friends in the neighborhood who ride so she got very motivated as she wanted to go with them and not be stuck scootering. Now if I could only get my 13 year old to try again but she's AuADHD.

At 11 he should be able to teach himself. I taught myself at 5/6 on a friend's bike.

Step 1 is to just completely ditch the training wheels. He is old enough to know how to pedal to propel himself forward. If you want to start an even more elementary level (aka how we taught our 4 year old), take off the pedals and have him learn how to use the bike as a balance bike. He should be able to balance the bike down an incline. Once he can do that, put the pedals back on.

There are YouTube videos on this. You don't need a private tutor.

Op here. I cannot bike, and I cannot handle his weight plus bike weight. He is 11, and he is near my height and weight. I am petite. DH has tried to teach him ONE TIME ONLY a few years ago, and he told me that he could not teach him. Bike sits dusty at home and DH says it is my fault to get him a scooter at young age. DH gives up on him. Well, he needs private lesson with a big guy. When he sits on bike, he leans his body weight forward and relies on the person holding his bike straight for him to pedal. I have tried a few times with him and my body aches all over after each session. He wants to try biking again because he wants to join his friends and he feels embarrassed.

OP may not be able to. My parents were older and not able to run behind steadying my bike. It took me forever to ride a 2 wheeler.

Agree with the posters to teach him yourself. Assuming he wants to learn take him with the bike to an empty parking lot or basketball court or something and hold the seat and jog next to him a few times. Most kids learn this without professional help.

How old is he? Have you tried teaching him yourself?

Is there something preventing you or your spouse from teaching him?

Does he have access to a bike? Our 5 year old's friend learned in 10 minutes borrowing our Guardian bike.

How old is he? He might qualify for occupational therapy at school if he’s behind on skills.

My kid cannot bike yet without training wheel, so he cannot join other friends to sign up mountain bike camp. It is too late, but I really hope him to learn biking. I have found a private instructor, but they will charge me $180 per hour for teaching him to bike. That is too expensive. My son is 90 lbs. I need to look for a guy giving him private lesson. Where can I look in the spring time in montgomery county?
