If your kid needs help, tutor them yourself or pay for tutors. Same with therapies. Mcps help us a joke except for a select few.

The top people at MCPS want all offices and buildings closed on Fridays this summer. That seems to be why there is a push for ESY and other summer programs to only be 4 days a week.

I was told ESY is moving to a 6 hour day instead of 4 and thats why they removed Fridays.

It’s rude to do all of these changes with ESY only a few months away. Families and staff need to make plans. If they ask teachers to teach 6 hours per day, plus planning time, that’s basically a full day for 5 weeks, plus pre service week. Will staff also have Fridays off? No one knows….

This decision does not seem to be well thought out from a staffing POV, and I foresee problems and issues with hiring.

MCPS originally switched ESY to 3 hours a day 4 days a week for 5 weeks. Then switched it again to 4 hours a day a couple of weeks ago. And now just announced it's 6 hours a day 4 days a week for 5 weeks...

Lets see if they finally settle on a number or if it will change again before the month is out 🙄

Yes, we just heard in special ed that they will only do four days a week. A really stupid decision because it will be hard to hire staff for these hours and very hard for families to plan for. They also want us to finish all ESY decisions by March, when some IEPs aren't due until later in the year. Try scheduling that many meetings early. What a mess...

I would suggest asking on the special needs board.

9-12 daily and only M-Th

From 20 hours to 12 hours a week.

Is that correct?

I think they said 9a-12p daily which I believe would add up to less hours than previous years.

Special Ed Lawyer or Advocate, is this legal?

ESY- would the days be longer if only 4 days a week?

I saw that too and was wondering if that was just regular summer school or if it also applied to special education extended school year.

Some set of services had 5 weeks and some had 4 weeks.

Can they just decrease hours like that?

One of the BOE slideshows recently said that all ESY was going to be 7/7-8/9 this year and would be Mon-Thurs.

Has anyone else heard this? The math seems to be that less hours would be offered this way. I know there are many many different ESY programs. Not sure if this applies to all/some or might be incorrect information.

Camp registration is happening soon and I’d like to start planning.
