I agree SUNY, other state schools, and Canadian unis like McGill and Toronto would be strong fits for this kid. Likely to have good options T-50 and below too, depending on what she wants to study.

School ends at 4:15. Has a studio component so an extra class. And commute is about an hour. Evening she does school work.

She doesn't want to continue studio interest in college so won't be too helpful

If testing is 1400+ I would strongly consider UK schools. Go look at the other post and even if you remove Oxbridge/LSE there are plenty of great options that in my opinion would be better than most t40-t75 US schools….

I was thinking the same. We live in western NY and we know so many kids who are happy and thriving at Geneseo, Buffalo, and Binghamton!

Though people like to say Binghamton is the “best” of the SUNY schools, it’s not like some states where there’s a big drop off after the “flagship”. Bing is indeed excellent, but each SUNY school has its own strengths. (Geneseo is right near Letchworth Park and the Finger Lakes, which are stunning!)

Finally, before everyone starts raging about the bad weather, know that student life doesn’t slow down in winter. The kids all roll with it just like in New England and in Michigan, Wisconsin etc.

Your kid should also take SAT or ACT. That will help narrow down options.

Summer job only is not the same, at all.

Not great that she has nothing, not even a PT job or volunteering commitment during the school year. Tbh I don't know any kid with that profile.

I would focus on good state schools, most of which care far more about stats than ECs. Look for some that aren't common applications at her school, since it sounds like she also has a lot of peers with the same academic profile.

My daughter is a freshman at a top 20 school. She had a couple ECs but nothing out of the ordinary and with limited time commitments. Instead, she worked her junior and senior year. She found more enjoyment in working than the ECs. I would not discount the value of having a job.

May want to spend some money on a counselor to help with the activities list.

At our public, not in NY, you stand a good
chance with a most schools.

I wouldn't worry too much, OP. Really, after top 30-40 schools, activities hardly matter. You can also look at Canadian schools.
