Going to sleepaway camp to relax, have fun, not use electronics, exercise, learn how to socialize and co-exist, decompress, and be normal kids. They work very hard during the school year and deserve to relax. It worked well for my older one.

People skills and emotional intelligence are greatly valued in the real world but not as much at DCUM. As hard as that might be for some to believe.

What did your older kids do that summer?

Some kids (home schooled one) already took APs and Calc 3 in middle school. (don't judge pls, let people live their life)

Only to struggle in the workplace because they can’t make small talk about NFL playoffs.

I know I know... you might want to stop here before the brainiac troops come

Religious activities can be helpful for college apps; just need the right framing.

Unless you're thinking "what can my kid do before starting high school to help with college admissions?"

In which case you're nuts.

Well, it would be helpful if it was something that would be enriching which could then ultimately lead to other things that then lead to college admissions.

In which case it doesn't belong on the college forum.

Sometimes all these “how to get ahead” questions make me smile. I mean, people can basically choose the IQ of a fetus now. Doesn’t that kind of beat everything else?

Yes, it actually helps to have our youngest be occupied with something, not just at home every day.

My kid did a specialty camp and volunteered at their sport camp last summer before starting 9th.

What are your rising 9th graders doing this summer? I have older kids so I am on this board pretty frequently, but also starting to think about the 8th grader.
