One of my son’s friends (age 13) trains at You Reach I Teach in Gaithersburg. He’s improved a lot over the past year from both training and playing on a good development team. My son wants to train here with his friend but the commute is too far for us.

Where do you live? That normally dictates where you will do skills work.
Our son too started late compared to his friends and started around 10 when everyone else had been playing together for several years. He was naturally talented so that helped but he was behind. We got him on a rec team and also on a local team that does local leagues and they both helped. But the real difference started happening when we put him into skills training. He stayed doing skills work consistently and his improvement jumped tremendously.
Now several years later he is better than all the kids he played with who had been playing for years. He plays on a travel team and for his middle school.
So let him know if he wants to play more competitively it will take time but if he goes to skills work and stays with it, he will definitely improve.

Op here. He enjoys playing basketball, but no one in his friend circle plays basketball. I know that he does not play basketball at school recess because some school kids play seriously at court. He is not good enough to join them. For a year, I sign him up with a weekly basketball lesson (lessons and scrimmage), and he has grown a lot from it. They are all kids from his race to play recreationally in a slower pace, and he is considered above average in that group. That's one big reason why he was a bit upset about his first practice performance yesterday at winter season.

Does he ever just shoot hoops for fun with friends?

My son started late to learn basketball rules & play basketball at age 9 last winter. Some players that played for years did not want him at all because he was not good. He was the only new player. A year forward now at age 10 this winter, he has made a ton of improvement given he does not even practice at all. I would say that his skills catch up a lot, but he still falls on the lower end of average level in terms of skills for current team. I also notice a few less skilled players from last season quit to play basketball this winter season. Is that common? These are all recreational teams. He was a bit upset about it on their first practice yesterday with his performance, and he thought he could do a lot better. He is the only minority on his team, and he is still not used to all other players are stronger, skilled and play faster than him. The coach was really impressed with his improvement.

After this winter season, I want to sign him up with some group basketball lessons or summer camps to improve skills. A few coaches have comented that he is a natural shooter, so I really do not want him to quit playing one day like others. I don't know what skills he is lacking, but I know that he lacks lower body and leg strength due to low muscle tones. Any recommendations for basketball camps and lessons in the area of Rockville, gaithersburg or germantown?
