When people talk about privacy film, they’re probably talking about a sheet of cling vinyl/plastic that mimics frosted glass. It’s pretty convincing! And unobtrusive either way.

Since stained glass involves colors and 3d lead…canes? Whatever it is called between the colors, it will not be nearly as convincing as a 2d fake.

OP I put frosted privacy film behind a semi sheer linen cafe curtain once in a kitchen. That worked great, you couldn’t really tell it was there and it made the curtain more private at night.

We also have a bunch of glass schools around town. I wonder if you could commission stained glass or maybe something like fused glass in a frame that could pop in in front of the window. If you want colored glass.

There are many patterns to choose from for privacy film. Go ahead and do it. It can be removed in 5 seconds if you don’t like it or even if you only want to remove it temporarily. There’s nothing to lose.

We put a frosted subtle design privacy film on a large window in our kitchen, which looked into the building next door. I didn't want any sort of curtain. I had it professionally done since it was so large.

In an earlier house, I had a powder room next to the front door with a small window. I had the glass in the small window replaced with an opaque pane that went well with the 1920s style of the house. Being in the front of the house I didn't want to use film on the window.

My teen uses privacy film on her first floor dorm window, got it online and installed herself.
Why not look into real stained glass? I have a few, found one at an antiques shop and two made by an acquaintance.

I have the fake stained glass but it is a muted shell/sliced rock look on the two small windows that are on either side of our fire place.

I’ve done clear, on a 2F bathroom window, in my old house. I’d be a little hesitant about doing that kind of thing in a downstairs “public” space. Definitely would not do a stained glass look, unless you have very young kids and the family room is kind of a colorful happy playground disaster zone anyway. I’d go with white sheer curtains - you can find incredibly inexpensive ones online - buy like 3x+ the width of your window to get privacy with light filtering.

We used a sheet privacy film on the sidelights of our front door. It lets light while still giving us privacy. We like having them vs the thin linen like cloth covering we had before…much more light. We dont find them tacky but that’s subjective.

I have two small windows in my family room that is usually covered with light filtering blinds....but I would prefer something else.. perhaps stain glass privacy films that lets light through .. have you done such things? Do you think they are great or tacky? Do I have other options?
