LaunchX is a club with kids working on building and launching a satellite. HackTJ is the club that plans the hackathon event of the same name.

The clubs are all explained to the kids in the first few weeks of the school, and once they're attending, they have access to the student intranet where they will sign up.

This is incorrect. The organization that builds and launches satellites is TJ SPACE. LaunchX is an organization that runs an annual pitch competition for students to build their entrepreneurial skills.

One of the best reasons to go to TJ - a primary separator between it and other schools - is the 8th Period program. It essentially allows students to belong to tons of fulfilling and resume-building clubs without having to stay after school to do it.

It also eliminates conflicts between key afterschool clubs and other activities like athletics, marching band, or theatre. You have tons of kids who are able to be fully-committed three sport varsity athletes but also participate fully in Science Olympiad, Model UN, Debate Team, and the like.

The clubs fall into 2 categories. Selective and non-selective.
Things like the science olympiad and the math team are selective the more fun things are usually not.
The important thing to remember is that your kid should be selecting them based on their interests.
You can't shepherd your kid's way through high school at TJ. it's way too late in the game for that.
