It amazes me that a mile or two up the road you have Vienna where the town council actually enforces zoning rules and seeks to maintain high property values with ultra low crime and top ranked schools whereas city of Fairfax seeks an opposite view of the world where everything is a zoning variance, has to be affordable or free, and as a result home values and school rankings lag far behind.
It’s because you have a bunch of college students voting in Fairfax city that are not invested in the long-term success/quality of life of the community. College students vote on vibes and memes, they don’t care about the future consequences because they won’t live there later.
