I've actually started learning to bake for this reason. The stuff I've made (mostly with the help of Sally's Baking addiction -- I have never cooked or baked so need recipes that really spell it all out for me) has not only been much, much better than any grocery store baked good, like so much better it's not even the same food, but in most cases also better than actual bakery stuff as well.


+1 I’ve started baking more recently and it’s amazing how much better homemade cakes made with a good recipe and quality ingredients are than cakes from bakeries.

The best thing I had was monkey bread made from scratch using the Sally’s Baking addiction recipe.

Inas potato and fennel gratin. The key is to cut the potatoes super thin - approx 1/16 inch - with a mandolin. Yummy!

The turkey roulade at Bistro L'Hermitage. We have gone there for Christmas for the past three years and I have ordered it each time.

Crabs! I had the whole feast on Christmas, but yesterday I was just so gross, and my stomach felt heavy, so I bought crabs. Nobody was at the house, and I had a blast eating them.

The baggie of Mexican wedding cookies my co-worker made as a gift.

The prime rib we ordered for Christmas dinner from Federalist Pig. I can’t remember the last time I had prime rib. It was heavenly.

I find the bakery thing to be so true. Out of town guests always going on and on about their local bakery and bringing something for the holidays from there. Always mediocre-sometimes outright bad.

I'll start:
Favorite store bought item was a cinnamon bun from Fresh Market. I'll never make them homemade again.
Favorite item on Christmas Day was a smoked ham from Harrington's in Vermont, It is not spiraled, has no glaze, and is absolutely delicious!
