I think that the biggest problem at GU is that they try to punch above their weight. They eagerly take students and faculty who view GU as a consolation prize for not being at an Ivy. It’s a thing among faculty too. Everyone has a chip on their shoulder about being there which is unfortunate.

My kid loves it there- maybe goes to 2-3 hoops games a year. It isn’t a big time sports school the way SEC and BigTen schools are, but the kids like their experience.

Georgetown reminds me of NYU. Both are in big cities, but students are mostly focused on careers, which means getting their degree and moving on. As one poster put it, it’s very transactional.

Georgetown had a great run for about 30 years and unfortunately it died off. Though the players were generally very removed from campus life as Thompson insisted on pushing the envelope with kids who shouldn't have been there academically (with a few exceptions) - athletes at all school are often somewhat below the averages, but at Georgetown it was off the charts.

Basketball has gone downhill and they cannot revive it no matter how hard they try. It is a shame. Villanova has managed to remain relevant so why can't Georgetown?

Have 3 cousins who are Hoya grads and none of them ever give money.

My niece is at Georgetown and she would concur with the article. There is zero school spirit for sports. She says the kids at Georgetown are just very serious, political and focused on their own aspirations to care about things like sports and rah rah college stuff.

I have no connection with Georgetown but this article appears to be just one kid’s opinion and college newspapers are notorious for complaining about their colleges. Georgetown football will never be a big deal there. In fact, they did away with the sport for several years a few decades ago. Basketball was very small time before John Thompson turned it into a national power, but it has not been very successful since 2010 or so. If they can develop winning teams the fans will return. As far as sports and school spirit are concerned I think it would be best to view it as a large liberal arts college in an urban setting.

Georgetown has so much more going for it. I wonder what’s keeping them from harvesting that potential.

100% agree that when home games aren’t on campus you lose a ton of kids

I was there during the Mourning era and sports was big but not Big10 big. March madness draft party at McDonough was an overall bigger event than the games. The football stadium is tiny and football isn't their forte. I do think it's hard when the home games aren't played on campus. It feels like any other event you might go to at Cap1 arena not like a school event. I did my graduate degree at Cornell and hockey games at Lynah were huge. I think there's something about bringing people onto campus that helps with school spirit.
