We plan to give our kid $200/month and reassess after first semester; it might go down (less likely to go up).

Our D1 athlete works summers and winter break (fall sport) and earns his spending money. Sport keeps him busy so there’s not a ton he needs outside of what’s covered by room and board.

My DD has a free tuition scholarship at the state flagship. We give her $500 a month. Dining during the week is at the sorority house.

No allowance. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn the value of a dollar. I’m not an unending supply of money. Whatever he earns is his to spend and I don’t have any more on top of tuition, room/board.

Nope. We have to pay full tuition (DIII) and she knows she’s responsible for any spending money. She has always trained all summer 2-3 hours per day (swimming) and still worked 40 hours with no issues.

There are sometimes rules regarding not working for scholarship athletes so check. Frankly if not getting compensation for the sports, I would quit the sports and work if need be.

Mine has a healthy bank account from summer work. But I still give her an allowance. She gets $50 a week. She is expected to use that to pay for team bonding activities and her winter break expenses (she has to return to school right after New Years and neither dorms nor dining halls are open for a few weeks), as well as her social life, clothes, holiday and birthday gifts, and whatever extra food she wants.

Mine has managed to put away 5K through summer camp counselor jobs and will (hopefully) save another 2K this summer. I assume that we will be paying for certain things but they will be paying for most of their day to day expenses.

I have a senior who will be playing his sport in college and there is a lot of training time involved.

He does not work at all during the school year (rigorous classes and sports) and did not work a lot of hours over the summer and he is already out of money and asking for an allowance.
He will probably work more hours next summer, but I’m not sure it will be enough to get him through Freshman year spending money and I expect the summer job market to be hard.
