I told my 7 yo to pack her backpack with some books, stuffies and anything else she personally needs for the trip and she did. She’s done this a million times before. Going through security her bag gets stopped and searched. They pulled out a full size tub of Cetaphil cream and confiscated it. She has some sensory needs and when packing she decided she needed “the good lotion”.

I was flying back into the U.S. earlier this year and had an oversize bottle of lotion pulled and chucked.

It gets flagged because it looks like a lotion bottle in the Xray. It's not taken because it isn't, and doesn't violate any rules. It's just a solid foam roller thing for my back which I need after flying. But they always have to pull it out and examine it. If it were lotion, it would be confiscated.

We also have to search for small bottles of contact lense solution ( it may be counted as medical but I didn’t want to take risk) just for the flight trip. Same for getting those 3oz sunscreen. For bottled water they asked you to drunk/pour all or throw entire bottle to trash, and they would do the same for any other liquid except baby formula.

Large bottles will still be flagged. I fly with someone that apparently resembles a large lotion bottle, and I'd say probably 80% of my flights it gets flagged if it's in carry on.

I was going to check a small bag because of sunscreen but the line to check in was so long that I ended up just taking it thru security. The guy ended up sort of shaking my suncreen and letting a couple thru that seemed to have 3 oz or less but tossing a more full one.

I think multiple large bottles of sunscreen would be noticed and taken. One bottle that's slightly over the limit would probably get through.

Just buy multiple 3oz bottles. I like the thinkbaby bottles.

It’s random. I diligently pack my liquids quart bag and rarely need to even take it out but once in a while you’ll get someone extra strict.
I do agree that they are more relaxed now.

Do airlines still enforce the 3.4 oz rule? It seems to me that a lot of the rules put in place after 9-11 are being relaxed. I’d like to carry on my bag to Costa Rica, but want to bring some larger bottles of sunscreen. What are the odds they’ll be confiscated?
