Top 3 scores win full scholarship to UMD.

Top 3 probably won’t even attend UMD.
And MCPS wants to destroy Blair? Poolesville isn’t even comparable.

Blair students live closer to UMD than Poolesville students. Also the SMCS program is twice as large. Just not as many PVHS students competing

Both rounds are proctored at local HSs and every public HS math coordinator within Maryland should have received registration information long before the competition. This competition has been established almost 30 years ago and happens annually. Also, PVHS SMCS program is about 75% in size compared to Blair SMCS, but both of them are great programs (and RMIB).

Great and top-notched are not the same. Yet MCPS seems intent on dismantling one of its strongest assets.

DS received notice of the exam from his math teacher via email. I also received notice of it. There was a link to previous years exams so you could look at the type of math problems. DS doesn't participate in the math competitions so these type of problems were not familiar to him.

The contest is in-school not at UMD.

Well only top 3 wins. It’s not that attractive since these top 3 would be Ivy League material. They should make scholarship to all honorable mentions. Maybe in the end there will be more than 3 from this list to attend UMD.

At least 2 students in recent years chose to attend UMD on the scholarship.

I think that some schools have a math teacher that administers this that does outreach on the school listserve (that is true of our school). I am certain that it is not equally publicized or supported at all schools.

Now would be a good time to reach out to the math head at your school to ask them what, if any, teacher coordinates this for your school.

Fair or not, some schools are going to be more proactive here so I’d become a bit of a squeaky wheel if my kid really wanted to do this.

Our senior DD participated this year (not Blair) and just hit the cutoff to make it to the second round. She had never participated in any type of math competition before but found it kind of fun.

I would encourage others to check it out if their kid enjoys math.

Wow Blair dominating that contest with the top 3 and 75 pct of the honorable mentions. With just a few schools even mentioned 1x
