It does happen but I think the coaches try to help you find another landing spot--another team that was originally recruiting you that has lower academic standards.

It’s quite common. Coaches know that the marginal academic prospects they recruit may not get through Admissions. It costs them nothing to have the prospect submit an application.

You really never know where your kid is on their priority list. Or how much Admissions is incented to accept athletes who are marginal academic prospects.

A few 2026 girls went from one Ivy to another after they did not get in to original school.

At super academically competitive schools it’s not a sure thing, AO will take your application and compare with all of the other early decision applicants and if it is academically at the bottom it will be a no, even if recruited. NESCAC schools have similar story. It’s a tough break if you are in that situation because now you have to scramble to try and line up another school that has an open slot and coaches are out for the holidays.

I'd reach out to the coach.

It only happens when the coach gets fired. And the new coach doesn’t want you.

Its rare, but it happens, especially at the very top schools, e.g., Harvard, Stanford.

Did your kids grades drop? Or get injured? There must be more to the story.

Did the kid reach out to the team recruitment people to let them know this happened?

Very rare. If the a academics are not a match for the school most coaches will not make an offer or will suggest a PG year. I am not aware of any local boys over the last 5 years where this has happened.

How common is it to be recruited to a D1 program, get through the whole recruiting process including admissions pre-read of transcript, but then get a rejection or deferral letter from admissions after applying ED? Are these players being warned by coaches so they can line up alternatives?
