Is that really the lowest premium you could find?

Is that through your employer? If so, shame on them, and definitely complain to your benefits group. That is really high.

I have a similar take home pay and our insurance is about $500/month.

We have military retiree insurance. My spouse's current job does not provide any benefits, including leave. You are told it upfront and decide accordingly. If we needed the insurance, they wouldn't have taken that job.

It’s awful OP. My spouse has great insurance thru her employer, we are fortunate. I agree with the PP that hates that our medical care is tied to our employers.

I’m sorry OP. The current system sucks. I think tying health insurance to employment is barbaric. People regularly lose their jobs and are then supposed to shell out even more money for Cobra (without a paycheck) or just go uninsured. Also, for profit health insurance companies are just incompatible with patient care. How can a company maximize shareholder value and also cover high quality care for insureds.

So now we are at the mercy of corporate insurance profits and companies wanting to contribute less toward premiums. And the average American doesn’t exactly have a ton of good, affordable options.

That said you made it sound like it’s getting paid out of take home pay. Do you not have the option of paying with pre-tax dollars?

That’s awful op. In your case, it’s like paying 35% additional tax. If you add that to your taxes, you get the EU or Canadian tax rate if not higher minus the benefits.

OK, those are mean replies. Not everyone has the ability to get a job with insurance. And not everyone has the potential to be a high earner. I feel for OP. I remember struggling when my kids were young because housing costs were so high and we were paying for daycare. Insurance is ridiculously expensive and the social contract where insurance is a benefit of your job has changed dramatically. I'm sorry it's tough for OP.
