Just look at Etsy.

Etsy is also overrun with junk.

That was the point...

You need to know what exactly to look for whenever shopping second hand. Please educate yourself before slandering an entire platform.

Yep that’s why I killed my Amazon prime account. So much crap, I’d rather go shop in person at Target.

I still love Poshmark, but I don't use it for super high end stuff. I get older J. Crew and Ralph Lauren dresses for work there. I can snap them up for $30-50.

But year, it's kind of obvious when an account is 100% "boutique" that they aren't someone selling from their closet. You can filter out the boutique sellers.

Amazon is sneaky. Search for Lego and most of the hits will be for Chinese knockoffs.

Same EXCEPT for Japan. Japan has very stringent laws about resale of designer goods. Huge market for Hermes resale, for example. Don't sleep on them. But yeah. Anywhere else, it's a no from me, dawg.

Agree, and you can't tell if the higher end stuff is authentic or not, even if its supposedly authenticated. I've seen clearly fake designer clothes, bags, etc. on all of those sites. The ones with few photos and a seller who doesn't respond to questions. Also the last time I bought something on etsy hoping for a homemade item from a small business, it shipped from China, and so probably wasn't.

I don't shop on Poshmark very often, usually only once very couple years when I'm looking for a higher end item where it makes sense to get in on consignment. Like that's how I buy most evening gowns because I see no point in paying for it new (unless I plan to re-sell it myself) given how infrequently I'll wear it).

I recently decided I want a "teddy" coat, but knowing that trend has been around for years and is likely even on its way out, I figured it made sense to see if I could get something higher quality used rather than buy a cheap one. I was just looking at Poshmark, and like 95% of all listings are those foreign retailers where the photo is a somewhat generic model photo (no photo of actual item) and they are available in "various sizes." So not actually a used item at all, these are cheap foreign made imports. Why are they on Poshmark?! That's not what it's for. I want to buy an item that is higher end but just pre-owned, thus getting a bargain on higher end style and construction. But mostly it's just cheap synthetic pieces sold new. WTH.

A very different thing but this is also what happened with Amazon years ago. There was a time when Amazon was a place you could go to find name brand items, sometimes at a discount because it was a warehouse remainer or last season or something. And then the foreign importers took over and now if you type in "Smartwool socks" or "Vince sweater", most of the results are not from those brands but from the foreign importers who make knockoffs and have perfected their search terms so they come up when certain branded items are looked for.

Anyway, I hate it. Online shopping was so much better 10-15 years ago, as was shopping generally. And now everything is just cheap crap made in China or Vietnam with the intent to be disposable and even the consignment market has been invade (I know I can use RealReal and ThredUp, which don't have this issue, but I liked Poshmark because I liked dealing directly with the seller back in the day, as I think that was a better way to vet an item than trusting the people who verify items for the clearinghouse resellers).
