Cumberland has bad drug problems and lots of very income folks. Generally they will help anyone with the shirts off their backs. Someone needed a ride to JHU hospital in Baltimore for a family member who was already there, and so many folks stepped up to help.

That said, we used to stop at for food near Cumberland at the Rocky Gap state park resort. It has gambling now and don’t know how the resort is now. Food was decent back in the day and kid ate free.

I drive through there 10+ times a year. Be careful. Avoid sheetz amd fast food joints downtown. One of the sketchiest towns in Appalachia. On par with Johnstown, pa. The La vale side seems a little safer and nicer, but subway will still ask you to pay for your sandwich before they make it.

I was born there. 95% of my extended family is still there. At one time it was a prosperous, thriving area with commercial activity from the railroads, factories and a nice downtown. As blue collar opportunities died out so did the town.

We had to make a pit stop there and it took me right back to my childhood. Nobody else could relate—my kids thought the entire area was sketchy, but that old school Roy Rogers was like a time capsule.

PS - Have never set foot in Cumberland again.

You don't have to go that far. There are Roy Rogers restaurants all over the DMV. I can't speak to the quality, but they're there.

You're missing the point. They're already going to be in Cumberland and need something to DO.

I stopped to charge my car in Cumberland and was pretty sketched out. It was just a very sad place.

I agree with the Roy Rogers! We also like the crabby pig. And stay at a hotel with a pool.

Go to Canal Place and there are a few restaurants there. I've eaten at Crabby Pig and it was perfectly fine.

Then on the way back, stop by Fort Frederick State Park. They can run around, see an old fort, and the C&O canal is there too.

If you drive a bit farther past Cumberland you can enjoy Deep Creek / Garrett County /Wisp ski area… hiking, state parks etc. Restaurant rec Spruce Forest artisan village in Grantsville

Going do this single event.

We’re going to Cumberland for the Polar Express and want to know what else we could do there with young kids. We’re aware there’s not much there but hoping for some ideas still. We’d also love any restaurant recommendations.
