A bit analogous but on a much smaller scale...Messiah College against all odds, managed to make it to the D3 College World Series baseball championship games (best of 3) and was promptly, utterly destroyed in the that series, losing by 20+ runs in each game. The games were over by the 2nd inning for all intents and purposes, but there are no mercy rules for the World Series games.

This was a team that was seeded 4th in their regional group (so out of 64 teams, they were considered #48 - #64 ranked).

On the one hand, they earned their trek to the championship series...on the other hand, the coach basically admitted they completely ran out of pitchers. They were never deep enough to win, but D3 had "egg" on their face that the actual championship games were so horrendously uncompetitive.

Lots of online bickering over what to do. Not sure there is anything one can do. It just so happened that Cinderella made it all the way to the ball before reality intervened.

In the last 15 years JMU has a pretty good record vs. ACC teams.

The ACC isn’t very P4-ish beyond the revenue sharing. The league seems unstable. If I were JMU I wouldn’t make that move. UVA and VT would never let it happen anyway.

VT is scheduled to play JMU next season. Let’s see if they find a way to avoid it.

Except, in order to get to the College World Series, it started with 64 teams, and JMU had to win their Regional of 4 teams, then win their Super Regional, and then make the College World Series.

Nobody thinks it's wrong for a Cinderella team to win the NCAA basketball tournament because they allow so many teams to participate and they "earn" their spot in the the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.

If College Football started with 30 teams, nobody would care if JMU was included...the problem with football is you can't play games the next day, so they would have to have colleges finish their regular seasons in mid-November and then start the playoffs. Not impossible to do, but unlikely. I think it expands to 16 teams next year.

JMU needs to join the ACC of they will never be taken seriously again after that game.

Alabama won this weekend. They proved they belonged. Same cannot be said of jmu and Tulane, both of whom were totally overmatched.

Meh, a couple schools got highlighted, no real harm - more a win.

This format isn't working. The powers that be have destroyed college football bowls, and replaced it with a committee's "feelings" and preferences for lesser teams. The inclusion of JMU and Tulane was ridiculous. Notre Dame, BYU, Vanderbilt, Texas, USC etc would have offered much better teams and more competitive games. Plus a bigger audience. The JMU and Tulane games were a waste of time for everyone.

Either go back to a 4 team playoff or take the actual best 12 teams. Guaranteeing spots to weak conferences was a fail.

The JMU and Tulane games yesterday were totally unserious, just a complete waste of time.

Will they make changes so that mid-major teams can never be in the CFP again? They should, but probably won't.
