Ok, but when did this change?

After World War II like the other poster said. During World War II servants left their in home servant jobs to work factory jobs for the war effort. They never returned to being in home servants. This is true in the US and in also in Europe.

Rich stopped having servants after the World Wars. You should watch a movie like “The Remains of the Day” to understand why.

Some of those homes are expensive and not that big and who wants someone else living with them vs. someone coming a few times a week.

Too many privacy issues with live-ins

The Nanny lives elsewhere and comes to the house to work 5 days a week with them.

Do they live in the palace? Does the palace really not have in live in servants?

And I guess my second question is when did servants become "staff"?

It was fairly common for upper and upper middle class people to have live-in servants before the war, and many houses and apartments were built with servants' quarters and kitchens intended for use by hired help. You just don't see it as much in post-war homes ... at least not for the upper middle class.

^^^and just adding that you also see at that time greater availability and access to machines that make housework easier, especially laundry

People don’t want someone underfoot all day. Brentwood homes aren’t large enough to give a live in help enough space to not be a burden to the family.

I doubt there is an abundance of house keepers who want to do it. People have their own lives and families. And living in a home with your boss sounds like it sucks.

Live-in help is not great unless you have a separate guest house. We hated having a live-in nanny, for example, and after a brief experiment with it, we found we were happy to pay a higher rate for a live-out nanny.

Labor is much more expensive now.
But fear not- the broligarchs are doing their best with trump as their puppet to collapse the economy so that labor is cheap cheap again like in lesser developed countries.

There should be a whole thread on what this dynamic would look like.

I was surprised that when Rob Reiner died, he wasn’t discovered until hours later by his daughter. I would have assumed that he had an in home maid or cook who would have discovered him. . I had the same surprise when Ivana Trump died and she wasn’t discovered until a day or so later. It seems that at least up to the 1930s, extremely wealthy households had live in maids, cooks, butlers, and chauffeurs. At least that is how it was depicted in books and movies.

Having grown up middle class, I have no idea how the uber rich actually live or when the culture of having live in servants changed. I figure DCUM has a lot of people who aren’t far removed from the ultra wealthy and can offer some insight into the culture of what their lifestyle is actually like.
