Yes, that book is where I first came across the name Antonia. 😊

Speak for yourself, Caroline. I'm a middle-aged white Jewish lady who loves Italian girl names.

I was just letting the OP know the reality. You may be open-minded but 95% of other posters aren't. They make it very obvious that only WASPy names are welcome here. Most of the responses would be very negative if you made a post about Hebrew (other than standard Biblical ones) or Yiddish names.

Antonia. I hate Karis the way Karis both looks and sounds out loud, and Karla is a name for someone born in the 1940-1950's. Except you Kardashianed it by slapping a K on instead of a C.

Karla is my niece's name so it gets my vote. I think anyone commenting on the spelling would find it interesting to know that Karla is currently more common than Carla in the United States. Additionally, people have different heritages. Karla has always been common in Germany + Scandinavian and Slavic countries.

Antonia is one of those names that has two standard pronunciations. Antony-a and On-tone-ia. I actually see the latter like the book.

OP here! We would pronounce it care-is.

We really like the anne-tone-nia pronunciation! When saying it quickly, we have found that it sounds more like anne-tone-ya.

Anonymous wrote:Agreed. Odd post. Is Karis a real name? And Karla? With a K? Antonia?

I just looked it up.

Karis is the anglicized spelling of the Welsh name Carys but can also be the anglicized spelling of the Greek name Charis. Karla is the Germanic spelling of Carla. Antonia is a feminine version of Anthony.
