I know two kids that transferred to a school they didn't get into the first try. But these are big state schools and not ivys. If you have a kid going through the cycle right now, that's not something I would talk about. You also need really good grades and activities freshman year and if you aren't at the right school, that might not happen to pick the best of what you are offered now.

Why looking to transfer? Careful what you wish for, as transferring for sophomore year can be devastating socially.

On the Yale admissions podcast they have said more than once that if you were rejected for first year admission there is no point in applying again. No idea if this applies to other schools or not.
