Hot take is that this is a colossally poor move. Good Counsel does not have the funds it did during the Dancel/Milloy years for obvious reasons. Without someone dumping millions into the program it is VERY hard to stay consistently good. The WCAC is also dealing with transfer bugs that all the d1 cats deal with. You aren’t Dematha who can get by on name recognition and is also all boys
Saint John’s has UA money- Gonzaga has elite men’s sports and fantastic coaching and is also all boys. Butting into Howard and Montgomery counties which are hardly football hotbeds is tough. This isn’t 2005 were you could throw a rock and find 20 tackle teams with 4 teams per age bracket. Now they just have 1 maybe 2 per age group. With kids electing to start later or not play- the pool of available boys willing to play drops off a cliff.
No average joe who would start no problem in public school ball wants to sit on the bench while some kid who’s never done anything from the program comes in and starts day 1.
We have freshman football in our league. No it’s not what it once was but we have 35-40 kids per team. We typically have 5-8 newbies per year
I love football and coach myself but we have 3-4 starters in freshman football this past year who were under 5”9 and under 130. If I was their father I would strongly encourage them not to play at gc because there is no point to go thru all the workouts and pay out the ass to fund a future recruits education
Which sports at Gonzaga are “elite”?
