My friend moved over Thanksgiving a few years ago - her kids were 13, 11 and 7. She said it worked really well to move during the school year and she was glad that by summer they were all well entrenched in their new routines and friend groups.

I moved from DC for my husband’s job a decade ago. I’m still a fed but in the field. I really liked DC but think it would be very different now and also didn’t have the experience of knowing the ins and outs of raising kids there. Our older daughter was almost 3 at the time and our younger daughter wasn’t born yet (she’s almost 9). It was really hard leaving and moves are no fun. My husband was excited for the move and I wasn’t so that was hard on our marriage too.

It has been great. Park City, UT. 5+ years ago.

Agree your kids are okay ages for a move. Good friends left dc when their kids were 9 and 11. They’re really happy.

Curious for others in this (or a similar situation) if you were forced to move, how is it going?

If you are going to move, your kids are at perfect ages to do so. I'd love to move but I have a high schooler and that seems cruel.

PP here. They were maybe 8 and 10? They adjusted well. They missed their DC friends but still connect via computer games. They’re are happy here.

Just agreeing today was a very rough day.

We left on our own accord when kids were 4 and 8 and have never regretted it.

OP if you have options elsewhere go now. It will get harder as the kids get older and more entrenched in friends, activities, school.

I'm sorry, OP. That's got to be scary.

We didn't move because of job loss, but to be closer to family, better weather, less pressured schools. It's been fabulous. DS was 7 when we moved and was anxious beforehand, but then was fine once things started. I regret not doing it sooner. Hang in there...I hope some great opportunity drops into your lap this week.

Today is a rough day, in fact… I just want to say if you need to move or decide to stay I think you will be OK. I’d pay attention to how much the kids like their school/the area.

I lost my job this summer. I was the primary breadwinner but we were good savers so we've been okay. I've been looking more "carefully" and the market I'm in (tech) is really tough so while I've had some final round interviews, I haven't received an offer.
