My first thought was she is tired, maybe overwhelmed. Is she in aftercare?


She sleeps 11.5 hours a night - 7:30-7. She needs a lot of sleep and she gets it! She is always like this, on weekends, in summer, on breaks, before K etc. Not in aftercare but does a few after school activities at her school. Most days she is home on the bus by 4. We tell her No to something and she cries. I don't give in because I'm trying to teach her that she can't get her way just by crying. I try to frame it as "Yes, not now though" and avoid a No response as much as possible. When she cries I give her a hug, acknowledge her feelings and try to distract her. I feel bad that she is so emotional. But it's also stressful when she wants something and I have to tell her No b/c I know she'll cry. I swear I try to avoid the No and not say it too much. I am working with the child I have! But it sucks to hear her cry. Thank you to all those who responded! - op


Does she cry at school? When my kid started K, there was a small tick in behaviors at home because he was doing so well keeping it together all day following rules and routines at school. School was also a LOT of sudden stimulation with so many kids and screens and loud teachers (We are quiet introverts who don't really watch TV or have iPads at home.).

My daughter (now grown) was like that as a 6 yo Kindergartener. She was emotional and weepy, sometimes telling me that she didn’t know why she was crying, and that just made her cry more.

I think full day Kindergarten is just too much. Over that Christmas break, her emotions calmed down and started to return to normal, but then when school resumed, so did the emotional overload. The good news was that by first grade she seemed to have adjusted and was able to cope better.

DC has been like that recently but this is a new behavior. Previously DC was a mostly happy child, now I often feel like they are on the verge of tears. Wondering if it’s the transition to K and a more structured environment?

My daughter is 6, a younger 1st grader and it's actually worse this year than last. There was a whole thing this morning because I wouldn't let her bring her new stuffed animal to school. She seems to really be asserting herself more than just blindly following along. I assume it's a phase but am parenting accordingly.

I have a son and a daughter. My son rarely cried. My daughter cried, I swear, nearly every day of her life through about age 9. She just felt things very strongly and would react with tears. She still cries a lot more than her brother, but it is way less than it used to be (maybe once a week or so). Some kids just react to many emotions by crying.

It seems like everything is a trigger for her. We are calm with her, but she just cries a lot. She's 6, is she too old to cry a lot or will this end? When did your daughter stop crying when upset?
