Basically this. Sounds a little harsh but...what will happen will happen. I'd hate to let these kind of fears limit my life so grab some Xanax or have a few drinks and just do it.

I get my doctor to prescribe a few Xanax to get me through the flight there and back.

I'm not sure they make me less nervous, but they make me too tired to care. That means I can't take them on short flights since I'm kind of a zombie, but on international ones they basically put me to sleep and I even more or less slept through turbulence, my biggest frar, a couple months ago.

Flying is still vastly safer than any other method of travel besides maybe passenger rail.

I get that you're seeing all these stories in the news and they are scary, but you need to understand you are not thinking rationally about it. Statistics don't lie and statistically flying is still an order of magnitude safer than driving, which I imagine you have no fear to do.

Funny because of course driving this distance (especially in potential bad winter roads) is probably 100x more risky than flying, and 50x more risky than taking the train.

Maybe an anti anxiety drug or a herbal remedy would help? Anxiety is by definition irrational so you can’t really talk yourself out of it. Are you religious at all? My mom always said a rosary during takeoff, which can be very calming — sometimes if I’m feeling nervous a do a quick “Jesus, Mary and Joseph protect us” or a quick Our Father.

I’m not a nervous flyer but DCA is making me nervous. It’s just so poorly designed for the traffic it now has. When possible I am trying to book out of BWI, with IAD as second choice. The odds are still very much in your favor with air line travel though.

Whatever. If you don't go you will travel less and less and it will be harder and harder.

The FAA under this admin is a disaster, but it’s still safe to fly.

I have always been a fearful flyer and was really rattled by the DCA incident. I’ve flown three times since, including two international flights this month. I had a really difficult time with the international flights. They seemed to go on FOREVER and I get so nervous during takeoff that I cry and almost throw up. It’s so embarrassing.

I’m supposed to travel next month for a wedding and see the plane is that 737 MAX which is a no go for me. Someone talk me down! I’m debating cancelling my trip over this and all the stories in the news lately including the IAD flight this week.
