I once gave up my master bedroom for my parents.

All my mother did the next day was complain the sheets were not up to her liking.

Never again did they stay in my house.

OP they get a hotel or they do not come.

My kids would share a room. One of their rooms would be given to the sister and her partner. Adult son can sleep on couch.

But I don’t let people invite themselves to stay over - can’t understand DH saying they should get a hotel and her saying no.

It's easy you don't have enough rooms available for everyone to stay. A conversation is to be had where family is told to either get a hotel, Airbnb or just don't visit. Kids don't get displaced its there room.

How does one "refuse" when told to get a hotel room?

"SIL, I'm so sorry we don't have enough beds or space for you to stay at our house. I recommend the Holiday Inn located at xxx. It's nice and clean and is only xx minutes from us."

And then the person says "No, I'm staying at your house anyway even if there are no beds"?? How is this even a conversation?

Pay for a suite hotel. Then either they go there or you take the kids there.

I would never kick my teenagers (or small kids) out of their own rooms for guests!

Primarily because their rooms are teen rooms and really not suited for guests. I'm very picky about rooms and cleanliness and our guest suite is beautifully appointed and comfortable. I can't provide that with my teens rooms! They'd have to sleep near a weight set for one kid and lots of mannequins and wigs for the cosplay girl.

This is why hotels and air bnbs exist.

MIL gets the guest room. The other 3 are told they're welcome to sleep on the couch or living room floor but that you'd suggest a hotel.

They flat out refused? Well, then I hope they like sleeping on air mattresses! You have them options. Please don’t sacrifice your kids’ comfort because they chose to be stubborn and cheap. I’d give them one final chance, mentioning the air mattresses, and then drop all guilt if they still choose to stay with you.

How big are the kid beds? queens or twins?

I would kick out my kids no questions asked and I actually can't imagine my kids thinking grandma should sleep on the floor. I don't give up my master bedroom, but I guess I have a guest room and haven't had to. We got our kids queen beds just for guest overflow.

You simply don't have beds for all these people. They can sleep on an air mattress or get the hotel like they should.

I have one guest room with an en-suite bathroom. MIL is visiting and her stay overlaps with sil, her boyfriend and adult son. We have three bedrooms and two bathrooms two kids rooms and one primary bedroom. My kids are teenagers, neither wants to give up their bedroom understandably. DH asked his family to get a hotel room near by, they all flat out said no. Where do these people sleep. I’m tempted to get a hotel room and stay there.
