"She couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexis" is definitely contributing to the trashy vibe. Alexia just sounds made up, or like you wanted to use Alexa but Amazon beat you to the punch.

That said, Alexis is the better of the two options and I've certainly heard worse. Use it if you love it.

To add of this, when we use her full name in our house, sometimes our Alexa does pick up, but it’s not a big deal lol.

I just think of them as early 2000s to 2015 names. They, especially Alexis, were extremely popular during that time period. They're not popular names for babies that are being born now. They continue to decline in popularity. Alexis ranked at 506 (out of 1000) and Alexia ranked at 883 (out of 1000) in 2024.

I don’t think they are trashy names at all. But i wouldn’t want to set my kid up for a lifetime of “Alexa, set a timer for 5 minutes “ jokes.

I'm sure that there are criminals named Katherine and doctors named Crystal out there. We have all met someone who did not match the person that we had imagined when we heard their name.

My point? The name does not make the person. The person makes the name.

I wouldn't say that they're trashy names. I've never met an Alexia but do know an Alexis that is about 22. She's not even close to being considered trashy. She comes from an upper-middle-class family and is a devout Catholic. She recently graduated from college and is succeeding in every aspect of life.

AI overview: "Alexia refers to several things, most commonly a neurological condition (word blindness from brain damage), a popular given name (like Princess Alexia of the Netherlands or footballer Alexia Putellas), an Italian pop singer, and a brand of frozen foods. The medical condition, also called acquired dyslexia, causes inability to read despite intact writing and speech, while the name signifies "defender of men". "

There is a running joke that people who cannot afford a Lexus name their daughter Alexis so that they can claim to own "Alexis". That could be where the trashy association is subconsciously coming from.

I forgot to add that our son's name is Patrick.

Aly Raisman's full first name is Alexandra. I think Alexia is a brand of frozen French fries, right? I like Alexis better. Don't think it's trashy but I grew up with a girl named Alexis from the UES in NY so that set the tone for me.

I would avoid names that are too similar to Amazon’s Alexa. Kids can be merciless.

Not a fan. The trashy vibe is true.

What does everyone on here think of the names Alexia and Alexis (for a girl)? I love both, but I have seen quite a few people call these names (particularly Alexis) trashy online. I know that I shouldn't care so much about what other people think, but I do not want my daughter to be judged negatively as soon as she introduces herself. I guess I'm just wondering what the general consensus regarding these names is.

I'm not big on diminutives, but we (mainly my husband) would probably occasionally shorten her name to either Allie or Lexie.
