Do you have fake plants? We had a lot of fake plants in with our goldfish. I agree with PP though, please make sure you are changing their water and cleaning the tank frequently. If they are lethargic, maybe it's because the water is dirty. They poop constantly.

How much salt is being used in the water? I think if it's not on a regular basis and for specific treatment only you should be ok adding some hardier live plants to the tank as well.

Goldfish are dirty fish who need frequent, weekly 1/3 water changes. I would not recommend other fish in a 20 gallon tank with Goldfish. Goldfish like colder water and most tropical fish at the pet stores like warmer water and the water parameters are different.

They won’t play with toys or a ball, if you are thinking that but, live plants are very good and will help keep your water clean. You can get low light plants that are no maintenance like Amazon swords.

Fish are capable of recognizing that people are present, so they do have mental capacity, but I'm not sure they can use toys Try giving them interesting food like a lettuce leaf (or live baby guppies if you want to), varying the strength of the water flow and bubbles, etc.

I have 2 tiny goldfishes in a 20 gallon tank. There are sand, a few fake decors, automatic feeder, timer lights and etc.. They look kind of bored sometimes in the afternoon. They get along well. DH hesitates to introduce live plants because we put salt sometimes in the tank for treatment. Do fishes get bored at all?

On side note, I feel bad every time I go to petco or petsmart and see those betta fishes seem like dying or hopeless.
