Do you have access to Naviance/Scoir/etc for your school? You should be able to get an idea about this based on your school’s data. If you disclose the college I can tell you our school’s data.


The data available to many of us in Naviance is limited. For instance in our large public high school they are careful to ensure privacy and provide no admitted data unless a minimum number of students applied to that school in a given year. And there is no info at all about what students applied TO. Are you suggesting that you have access to all this information for all the schools and can get it and report here? How?

If she has an ED2 she likes a lot, I'd do that.

Our school's naviance deosn't have a minimum threshold and it also has a TO filter. I think each school chooses how to configure Naviance.

That said I'm not sure it's possible to interpret deferral info in Naviance. I don't see a symbol to indicate deferral and think they might end up as just classified as rejection/waitlist/acceptance (at the end of RD) instead.

I have it for almost all schools, unless there are fewer than 5 kids who applied over the past six years. Public school in NJ.

Search loci on here. A good thoughtful, detailed and personal to the school loci can help. But it’s not easy. It’s like another personal essay.

Hire professional help but focus on stronger RD apps.

Look at your school’s Naviance data. I had a college coach tell me that NESCACs try not to defer ED then waitlist. I’m sure it happens but have heard it’s not as common among NESCACs. If your DC is sitting in a cluster that is mostly all accept or waitlist and basically no rejections, that’s probably a good sign. If it leans rejection, it’s probably a steeper hill to climb ED.

The PP comment on Middlebury not deferring is accurate. I have a kid there so we did a deep dive on their admissions process. I’ve heard about 10% of EDs get deferred. Also if your DC is looking at Midd and was deferred ED1 be open to a Feb admit in the RD phase and notify the AO as part of continued interest letter.

Middlebury rejects most and defers a small number. I think Bowdoin and Williams defer a larger percentage.

It really depends on the school. Even NESCACs have differing stats with defferals. Some defer a lot and wind up rejecting most; others practice a bit more kindness and won't string kids along just to reject them, so they may defer less. I would treat a deferral at a highly selective NESCAC as a likely rejection, but send a LOCI in the new year, and plan to put their energy into finding a new college, whether that's ED2 or casting a wider net RD.
If you can include the school it's easier to offer better insight, of course. Good luck. Tough week for many kiddos.
