1) It helps legitimize and solidify the al qaeda prince

2) It lets America's greatest ally keep up the charade of being important

3) It keeps the US engaged in the region

Basically every answer in MENA comes down to #2 in the end, however. Sacrificing a few Americans every once in a while is the cost of doing business. And these soldiers aren't dying as heroes, they're being served up as martyrs to another Lost Cause.

We really need to rethink why any American soldier is in the Middle East. We are self reliant when it comes to oil. The Cold War is long over. Our adventurism in the region after 9/11 was a disaster.
