I almost wish they didn’t do this. We got a deferral yesterday which will mean waiting for a final decision until April. My daughter might just move on.

Anecdotally a large percentage (more than 20%) of Stanford deferrals gets accepted RD. Of course nothing is guaranteed.

At least in this cycle, Princeton defer 80% of applicants is not true.

Deferral is no guarantee.

If there is a clear 2nd choice, you could pivot to ED2. Otherwise, I'd prepare to be waitlisted and stay in limbo ending up in ultimate decline. (Happened to DC #1.) Personally, I wished she had just given up on Stanford and got excited about the others on her list that seem more possible.

It means your kid has a strong application.

Focus on the RD schools - apply to a bunch now. Pour heart and soul into those RD essays - they matter, and they matter A LOT (more so at certain schools over others).

Go through a printout of the Common App to make sure your kid is hitting all aspects of their values, personal qualities, and admissions narrative without repetition.

yes, this was my kid. It's horrible what these kids get put through. Some schools (Duke last year) won't waitlist kids after deferring them and feel like they should be able to render a decision after looking at a kid's application twice. I appreciate this.
Others like Stanford were happy to lead kids on interminably from Dec 12th to AUGUST.

Just mentally treat the deferral as a rejection which is easier said than done because hope springs eternal. But is at most of the top schools. The chance of a deferral turning into an acceptance RD is about 5% at most of those schools.

I wouldn't ED2 unless it's a school your DC really loves. But I would be optimistic about RD chances, though probably not at Stanford (sorry).

Support your DC in their thought process/decision making around ED2, if one of those schools is high up on their list or if their main goal is the highest ranked school they get into ED2 could be the right choice. However, it isn't right for everyone, some regret it and some students do well in RD

Yes. My DC was deferred Stanford REA and was later accepted. It is hard to get a deferral from Stanford so take it as a good sign!
