I have dark brown hair. I've been dying my hair at home for years with henna and indigo, which are very cheap, but do take longer to set than a modern dye.

I have blonde hair with a lot of gray, so highlights blend pretty perfectly. I get away with a bit longer than 3 months.

Zero! I stopped coloring this summer, and my hair is shinier and healthier than it’s ever been. I had to come to terms with my real color, which to be honest is more white than gray, but I accept it now.

I do miss having brown hair, but I don’t miss the hassle and expense of coloring my hair one bit.

Can you explain them? Do they just give you a bottle of dye to apply at home and you're paying to buy that? Or do they do your hair for you?

I mostly use Madison Reed for color. Earlier this week, I got color and cut at a salon for $520 including tip

To me, this is a lot, but I have not sought out other stylists so I don’t know what is common these days.

How much do you spend on your hair care for similar service?

Or have you decided to try to manage the grey with do it yourself products? I don’t even know what to look for.

For a quality cut, highlights, and lowlights, this is pretty spot on for the cost, at least in this area. It’s just expensive. But if you aren’t happy with the results, that’s another story. This is similar to what I pay at my salon in DC. I go every 3-4 months.

I can't handle salon pricing anymore especially since I now need a touch up at the three week mark.

I'm straightforward single process though, so not complicated. I recently started buying Wella Color Charm demi color (much better than permanent for brunettes) and do it myself. Finding the right shade is a work in process but I think I'm there, need to mix two colors to achieve it. I believe it's the same product my stylist used. Demi needs to sit longer to cover grey, 45-60 minutes depending on how resistant they are, and it's more like highlights than an opaque color would achieve.

OP, your process is a lot more complicated, with high cost typical for this area. You could switch to single process, which would probably cut your bill roughly in half. If you really like your current color, don't think you can achieve that at home.

Mid 30s with a lot of gray - I’m wearing it naturally now (and will likely do so once it’s all gray too). Friends are doing the same.

I was playing close to 300 ever three months before the pandemic. I switched to Madison Reed during the pandemic and it looks pretty close to the same for $130 a year. Plus it’s way more convenient to do it at home where I can get stuff while the color sets and do it at 10 pm or 7 am if that’s convenient for me.

I buy expensive hair shampoo, conditioner and leave in product.

I think my last cut and color was $265 at adil's salon in Arlington. Full color.

I get all over dye and blowout/flat iron, and it's over $200. I just decided (helped along by the fact that my stylist is going on maternity leave) to go to a hair school while she's out, and then at least every other time, to cut down on cost.

This is partly because of expense but I feel okay about it because it shouldn't get too messed up to slap dye on my whole head and to just say "cover the grey, and don't leave a line of demarcation".
