I think the State Department has been exposed as ineffective & misdirected. You want to be involved in international stuff, try a Corps: Peace or Marine.

My kid’s a few years away but don’t they have plenty of options for financial aid?

I'm inclined to agree on principle, but what makes you say that and is your kid attending?

There is no school worth a $95k price tag. None.

It is very important that one learns how to read and do research with sources beyond your i.phone. Also for a career in a foreign policy sector, do include a specific skills focused area by the time of your masters not just a general area studies.

On the job be willing to stay beyond regular hours if given the heads up one can listen in on phone calls to get background information on a topic rather than saying you have a yoga class or such to get to. Also do some reading on the history of the country, region or policy topic you are working on. Do not tell someone seeking your input “Well I do not know much about XXX what happened before 2020 (when one started a job).

These points can help you keep your job beyond the probationary time. Plus it is going to be a very competitive job market as the field opens up. I heard these stories from DD trying to work with and figure out the work ethic of recent grads the last couple of years.

Likely that next administration will hire more Foreign Service folks. Now is a fine time to start a 4-yr degree at SFS.

That said, it is important to remember that Foreign Service folks get civil service salaries (plus cost-of-living supplements overseas).

This is what will happen and all of these kids will be poised to be a part of the solution.

Well, we hope. But there is no guarantee we won't be stuck with another Republican administration that maintains the cuts.

Yeah applications are down at our private DMV school for this same reason. Great school but kids want to be employed after spending all that $$$ on college!

It's a well-known and well-respected foreign policy program. Trump's attacks on federal workers and the State department are unprecedented, and while no one has a crystal ball, I would hope that the Georgetown SFS remains the strong school it has been.

I would guess that perhaps applications might go down due to people having the same concerns about career prospects, just the same way they went up after Bill Clinton got elected (since he was an SFS alum).

This is the exact time to be studying international relations and foreign policy in DC. The discussions in class could not be more acute and urgent as existing frameworks and institutions are being challenged and dismantled.

It was my DS's 1st choice for years until all the Trump cuts to the state department and foreign service make him worried about career prospects. Is Georgetown SFS a viable program at this time or should he consider another field/discipline?
