This is what you want for a kid this age. They are battery-powered and run on the same wood tracks as other Brio trains so the locomotive can be hooked to other cars. Very fun!

I do NOT recommend the Lego train for a child that young. My 9 year old has it and it's VERY cool but finicky. He needs a lot of assistance and he's very tech savvy.

How long do kids play with Brio? When are they usually outgrown? That's part of why I'm asking here.

I am torn between getting that for his stocking, or telling his grandparents, who usually get one big gift, to get a lego set.

Our 2nd grader still plays with Brio and Duplo. Starting to play with Lego.

You might get a couple of years out of it but yes lego has taken over by 8yo in our house.

He does go to preschool, but he was on one of those Polar Express train trips when he asked, so I assume that was the inspiration.

Oh man you are reminding me of a battery powered steam engine my mom bought my kids when they were little. It was cute but so loud! It would go all around our downstairs (hardwood floors) doing the chugga chugha choo choo sounds.

Our kids have Thomas trains and tracks that run by themselves.

There are some battery-powered Lego trains. Would probably need help from an adult to assemble, but a good option.

This is what my 4 year old asked Santa for.

He likes lego a lot, but is open to other ideas.

Any suggestions for a specific train?

Asking here even though he's a preschooler because I'd love to get something he'll play with for a few years.
