Subject: Would it be weird to include a photo?
Definitely agree, send the photos! Older relatives will love them printed.
I get one card like this each year - from a former colleague who is older with grown kids. He sends a regular Hallmark type holiday and and there's a regular photo print inside, usually him and his wife on vacation it's great!
I don't see any connection to gifts or creating that obligation.

Not tacky, this is how it was originally done, when people first started doing photos (unless they did a Christmas letter too like my mom!)

I low key miss the old days when we'd do letters inside cards with the wallet photos you'd get from the school picture package.
That's exactly why you would get them. To pass them around to relatives at holiday time.
Now everything is digital and just not the same.
Like we used to have morning papers delivered before 7am, if not 6am, and you'd read them in the kitchen with hot coffee early in the AM.
Now people just look on the internet or turn on the TV to see if the world is ending. Or something

My mother absolutely loves getting "real" photos of her grand-nephew that she can put on the fridge or mantle. She wouldn't bother to get digital photos printed, but she really enjoys when she gets something in the mail with a hard copy photo.

That's the best of both worlds, a handwritten message and the photo!
Personally I like seeing the whole family more than just the kids but if you only have the kids that's fine, too.

I’m writing out Christmas cards tonight. I send only a few cards, but the are traditional cards that I write in. I also don’t use social media.
