Why wouldn't each family member just put it in their own carry on? Why would they need to pack them all in one?

Everyone in my family is a pack animal because we only do carry on.

I put it into a small reusable bag and stuff it under the seat. it doesn't fit well in the overhead.

Wear it on. Checking is risky. Why waste carry-on space?
As others said, use as a blanket or stuff it somewhere. They are easy to compress.

Wisdom right here!

I never check a bag so jacket is either in carry-on, in personal item (backpack) or on me.

This is what I do too. Plus I always get cold on a plane.
Have no idea what to do with a long wool coat. I see men fold them and put them on top of the carryons. I would do anything I can to avoid bringing that kind of coat.

Plus, puffers are easily washed, which you want on a plane.

If your using your coat at your destination then carry it on. Most puffers can be folded to go in the front compartment of a carryon suitcase.

Same. They take up too much room in a bag.

I wear mine on the plane (I only have a carryon) and then I pull out a bag (like a Baggu) and stuff it in there and under the seat.

I never check bags so always bring everything onto the plane.

For the first time ever my family is flying over Christmas internationally to a colder weather destination. I can’t decide if we should wear our puffy jackets onto the plane (this sounds safe but the least practical in terms of the flight), pack them together into a single carry-on (in which case one of us would have to forgo their own carry-on), or pack them in checked bags. Advice from more experienced travelers??
