And I worked at Central Office 5 years ago and was also surrounded by people who really did care about their jobs and would get very frustrated by decisions or circumstances that seemed to make supporting students, teachers and principals more difficult instead of more effective (because sure, sometimes bad or confusing decisions were made). But mostly people worked hard and cared about students and better outcomes.

As someone who actually worked there... The majority of people are former teachers/school leaders and really passionate about schools and students. That said, it's not what it used to be pre-pandemic, which burned a lot of people out. DC gov benefits are decent. Central is almost always targeted for cuts when the city budget requires it, so a PP is right that there are often layoffs/department reorgs when that happens, and there's a lot of doing more with less. For example, the teams for community engagement and teacher/school leader recruitment team have a fraction of the staff they used to.

Okay this sounds pretty ominous. I appreciate the insight.

They reorganize and fire staff on the regular.. If you take it spend a lot of time networking so you can move into new position when this happens.
