The authentic Mughlai recipes. Again, slightly involved recipes at times but follow it to a tee and you get the most delicious and exotic dishes. This is another cookbook that I have made every single recipe.

My favorite cookbook. I love cooking from scratch and I have been able to learn the cooking techniques here and replicate most everything that I have eaten in Thai restaurants. Also, every single recipe is a hit.

I find we use the Giada books very regularly, and have never had a recipe of hers miss (and we were never fans of her show, just wound up with one of the books and liked everything we made from it so much, we got 3 more).

Specifically I'm referring to her older books - as she tried to get 'healthier' in recent years there are some potentially disturbing themes - like trying to 'lighten up' certain recipes for her (at the time) preteen daughter, who clearly did not need to monitor calories.

What is the difference between the recipes in them? Or does he just like a book over an iPad/printed recipe?

I think Smitten Kitchen has gone downhill; I'd purchase one of her older books if at all. Agree with NYT cooking subscription or one of their books, or a book by one of their people like Melissa Clark.

Mark Bittman's books are great, too.

I like to give NYT Cooking subscriptions as a gift. There’s an endless trove of excellent recipes and the daily emails often inspire my cooking choices for that day’s dinner. I always read the comments to see what tweaks can be added to make the recipes even better.

Thanks! I think I'll try the I Dream of Dinner - like the idea of a less meat focused cookbook. And then the ATK mediterranean cookbook popped up which I don't think we have yet.

I also love and cook frequently out of I Dream of Dinner by Ali Slagle, who is NYT recipe developer. Not great if you're huge meat eaters bc it has a lot of veg recipes but many have become dinner staples in our house.

Samin Nosrat has a new cookbook - Good Things - which is where I'd start. The Smitten Kitchen cookbooks are also reliably good.

Both of these lean toward everyday vs. showstopper cooking.

Anyone purchased a cookbook recently that they love? Looking for a gift for my husband who hates internet recipes and loves cookbooks (and does all our cooking). He already has all the America's Test Kitchen one, SFAH, Food Lab, and classics like Joy of Cooking. We also have some Madhur Jaffrey Indian cookbooks.
